As part of Rhode Island’s ongoing commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Tiverton Middle School recently held a ceremony to plant a Liberty Tree. The event featured a reflection on the historical significance of Liberty Trees in Revolutionary America and a formal dedication of the site. Program highlights included a moving performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the Tiverton Middle School Concert Band. Keynote remarks were provided by Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, RI250 Commission Chair, followed by Senators Louis DiPalma and Walter Felag, Representative Michelle McGaw, and Town Historian Susan Anderson. THS senior Norah Winslow read Thomas Paine’s poem, “Liberty Tree,” which was followed by the band’s final selection, “America the Beautiful.” The morning concluded with remarks by Council Vice President David Paull and an outdoor planting of the red maple Liberty Tree that commemorates the state’s significant role in the American Revolution.

Recently, the Tiverton Middle School Mock Trial Team took its passion for the law on the road, starting with an exclusive tour of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Our students went behind the scenes of the state’s highest court to see the judicial process in action. They met with several local judges and had the invaluable opportunity to learn firsthand about the career paths and dedication required to become courtroom leaders. The trip concluded with a powerful visit to the RI State Archives, where students stood face-to-face with two historic versions of the Declaration of Independence. Seeing these documents reminded our students that the laws they argue in mock trials today are rooted in the courageous words written centuries ago.
