Winter Service Project
Good Morning, Please see the attached flyer about our School-Wide Winter Service Project. We're very excited to be partnering with the Izzy Project from Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for this project. Children who are receiving long-term or significant medical assistance will receive from Pocasset art supplies the children can use to help pass along the long hospital days and nights, especially during the holidays. We are collecting items this week and next week. Our last collection day will be Friday, December 8, so our coordinators (Nurse Duarte and Mrs. Simmons) will have time to deliver the items to Hasbro during this holiday season. Thank you for all your help, Dr. Suzette Wordell, Principal

Good Morning Pocasset Families, This morning at 9:18 am, we hosted our first "Sheep, Shepard, and Wolf" drill (the elementary version of a lockdown drill). Members of both the Tiverton Police and Tiverton Fire Departments were onsite to offer support and feedback. The drill lasted 10 minutes total, and we were universally complimented by both departments for how our students and teachers/staff performed the drill. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks, Dr. Suzette Wordell, Principal

Good Morning Pocasset Families, Each year we practice safety drills with our students. The most commonly know are fire drills (which we have completed 3 so far). There is another drill that we practice with our students: lockdown. We use the ALICE protocols that every adult in Pocasset (including all teachers and teacher assistants) have been trained in to unify our approach in a very child-centered way. Since we are dealing with elementary students, I read the ALICE recommended children's book to all classes this morning, called "I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared". In this book, we teach our elementary students that our lockdown drill is called a "Sheep, Shepard, and Wolf Drill". The students are the sheep, the adults are the shepards that will lead them to safety, and the wolf is the unexpected visitor. We ensure that when we perform the drill, we use age-appropriate language and have social-emotional personnel here to support any students who may need it. I also will send an email home at the conclusion of the drill so you are aware of what happened and how our practice went. Last school year, we practiced 4 lockdown drills with no incidence. I am including a link here: https://youtu.be/F4vmSsgkhHc of a video that explains ALICE to families. Thank you to Mrs. Simmons for the video link. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at swordell@tivertonschools.org. Thanks, Dr. Suzette Wordell, Principal
