There are several ways to capture video in premiere, manually or automatically.

The automatic setting will only work with digital sources with a time code. Using an analog capture card or the pass-true feature of some miniDV/D8 cameras will require the use of the manual capture mode.

Let’s assume that we are using the automatic capture mode. First we will find the beginning of the clip we want to capture. Use the on screen controls or keyboard commands to cue the tape. Keyboard commands are as follows.

Play/Pause

Space Bar

Rewind

R

Stop

S

Fast Forward

F

Mark In

I

Forward 1 Frame

Mark Out

O

Backward 1 Frame

Left Arrow

G

End Capture

Esc once, twice will cancel capture and delete captured video

  1. cue the tape to where you want the captured clip to start and mark that point as IN
  2. cue the tape to the point you want the clip to stop capturing and mark as OUT
  3. in the capture group click the In/Out button
    1. Premiere will automatically rewind the tape and capture the marked clip.
  4. You will be prompted for a name for the captured clip, enter the name and click ok.

Now let’s look at the manual capture mode.

1. Cue your source tape

2. Press play on the source

3. click start capture in the capture window (or press the G key to start recording)

4. when you want to stop capturing press Esc once

You will be prompted for a file name, enter the name and click OK

5. Stop the source tape.
