Graphics III – Photoshop Filters

Definitions:

Artistic Filters – Used to replicate natural and traditional fine art effects. You can apply such affects as Colored Pencil, Dry Brush, Film Grain, Plastic Wrap Sponge and Fresco.

 

Blur Filters – Used to simulate an object in motion and often used to retouch photographs.  Use the Blur filter, such as Gaussian blur, Motion Blur, or Radial Blur soften a selection or and image.

 

Brush Stroke Filters – Similar to Artistic filters, Brush Strokes mimic fine arts brush work and ink effects.  Examples include Accented Edges, Crosshatch, and Spatter. 

Distort filter - Creates three dimensional and other reshaping effects.

Distort filters can completely reshape an image. They are some of the most demanding filters on your machines resources.  Examples are Glass Pinch Shear and twirl.

 

Noise Filters -  Used to retouch or give an aged look to photographs. Examples include Add Noise, Despeckle, and Dust & Scratches.

 

Pixelate Filters –Filters such as Crystallize, Mosaic and Pointillize , add small honey-comb shapes based on similar color.  Photoshop applies Pixelate filters as soon as you coick the command; they do not have a preview box.

 

Render Filters- Allow you to transform three-dimensional shapes and simulated light relections in an image.  Filters in this category include 3-D Transform, Clouds, and Lighting Effects.

 

Sharpen Filters- The Sharpen filters, Sharpen Edges, Sharpen More, and Unsharp mask, bring blurry objets into focus by increasing the contrast in adjacent pixels.

 

Sketch Filters- A sketch filter applies a texture, or simulates a fine-art hand-drawn effect.  Examples of sketch filters include Chrome, Graphic Pen , and Stamp.

 

Stylize Filters- Produce a painted or impressionistic effect.  Examples of Stylize Filters include diffuse, Solarize, and Wind.

 

Texture Filters- Give the appearance of depth or substance.  Thes filters include Craquelure, Mosaic Tiles, and Stained Glass.

 

Video Filters- Restrict colors to those that are acceptable for television reproduction and smooth video images.

 

Digimarc Filters- Embed a digital watermark that stores copright information in an image and notifies users that the image is copyright protected.

 

Other Filters- You can apply the other filters category to create your own filters, modify masks, or make quick color adjustments to layers, or portions of existing layers.
