Comparing TIFFs, GIFs and JPEGs
This should help you see the relationships between the file formats, their file size and the quality of the images.

Quality = 0
File Size = 16.8 KB

Notice how the maroon text has faded into the building and it looks splotchy.

Quality = 1
File Size = 20.9 KB

Still unacceptable...

Quality = 2
File Size = 23.4 KB

This would be usable if file size was your priority.

Quality = 3
File Size = 26.6 KB

This one if no priority.

Quality = 4
File Size = 31.0 KB

This one if quality is the priority.

Quality = 5
File Size = 31.6 KB

It would be rare to need a Quality 5.

Quality = 10
File Size = 112.3 KB

I know what you are thinking. Even quality 5 is not that great. But we have to keep in mind that this is just a web image, and until everyone has broad bandwidth, we have to be careful with file sizes.

Also, let's take a look at our Clean Version. It is not much better.

GIF Image
File Size = 83.5 KB

Note: If we had a TIIF file of the same image, it would be:

TIFF Image
File Size = 349.2 KB

Now let's take a look at a GIF.

Notice in the bricks, the transitions between pixels is not smooth. And look are the file size. It is over three times the size of an average JPEG.

Study these image for a few minutes and you'll get a really good feel for file formats, file size and image quality.
