State Assessment Performance Policy

The Tiverton School Department strongly supports the Department of Education’s attempt to improve student achievement by requiring students in grade 11 to take annual assessment exams in Math, Language Arts, and Science.  Student attendance is expected on test dates. Students who are absent are required to make up missed assessment sections requiring loss of future academic class time.  In an attempt to improve student achievement at the high school level on the state assessment exams the School Committee supports the following:

1.     All state assessment results shall be included on student transcripts.

2.     Beginning with the Class of 2009, students who achieve a level of “Proficient” or “Proficient with Distinction” on the state assessment (NECAP) shall be exempted from seat portion of that end of course assessment in the appropriate content area.

3.       Every incoming ninth grader who failed to meet the Language Arts and/ or Math will be identified and will be eligible for literacy support classes and after school tutoring.

4.        Students who achieve the standard on two of the three Math Assessments and/or three out four of the English Language Arts Assessments in the 11th grade will be exempt from taking their mid-term exams the following year in the areas of Math and English.  Students who achieve the standard on the 11th grade State Writing Assessment will be exempt from taking their English-12 mid-term exam. This section will end in June 2008.  This is the last class that participated in the New Standards Reference Exams for their state assessment.  Number two in this section will apply to classes graduating in June of 2009 and those that follow.
