Winter Newsletter

"Congratulations to students and staff at Tiverton High
for achieving the annual yearly progress in the state assessments last March.
THS was one of 22 high schools to achieve this status."

THS Implements Literacy Strategies Across Content Teaching Areas

In response to high school reform initiatives and efforts to complete development of our school scaffolded literacy program, Tiverton High has begun utilizing three primary strategies to support reading, vocabulary and concept development in classroom instruction. The strategies that the staff has chosen to use are the Frayer Model, three column notes, and quick writes. All strategies can be used in any classroom and are useful study strategies for all students as they move onto post-secondary education.
Implementation was begun after collaboration with consultants from the East Bay Educational Collaborative and high school lab classroom trained teachers. Teachers demonstrated strategies in each department and collected samples for department chairs to review. This initiative is the final piece of the literacy system development at the high school, and the strategies will be aligned with instruction and curriculum as part of the school improvement plan.
The high school is continuing to work with the R.I. Department of Education towards completing its comprehensive proficiency based diploma system. All schools must have this system finalized by 2012 in order to issue “Regents” approved diplomas. Our staff has been recognized for its work in common planning, personalization for student transition to high school, and our comprehensive school counseling program. We will continue to analyze and address the areas of alignment, access, and fairness of the overall system.

Annual Salt Survey

THS is working with the Rhode Island Department of Education and the national Center on Public Education and Social Policy (NCPE) at the University of Rhode Island to improve the educational experience of students in our schools. Students will partake in our Annual Salt Survey during the week of January 28, 2008. Parents/guardians are encouraged to voice their ideas and thoughts as well.
Students will be given a packet with the Parent Survey and instructions. After filling out the survey, parents are asked to return it to us, sealed, in the manila envelope in which it was sent home. These surveys will remain sealed until they are received by the National Center on Public Education and Social Policy at the University of Rhode Island. The survey can also be mailed directly to NCPE to the address provided in the packet.

Student Achievements

Congratulations are also extended to Tayla Petit, Grade 10,
on receiving the Rhode Island Tennis Coach Association’s Sportsmanship Award for 2007.

Good Job, All

Yearbook Sales

Yearbooks are on sale for $75.00 until February 16, 2008. Any student who wishes to purchase personalization must submit their order by January 25, 2008. The price of yearbooks will increase after the February recess.

Senior Project Judges Needed

On May 28, 2008, seniors will be making oral presentations of their Senior Projects to panels of five judges, comprised of teachers, staff, parents, and other community members. This is an exciting moment for seniors, as it is the culmination of a self –selected, year-long project. Topics are as varied as the students themselves, and include music, dance, architecture, cooking, surfing web site design, and many more. Last year we had more than 80 parents and other community members participate. If you would like more information about being a judge, please contact Tiverton High School’s main office at 624-8494, ext. 202. (Please note, parents of seniors are not allowed to judge.)

Dress Down Money Distribution

Each year Tiverton High School sponsors “Dress Down Days”. For a fee, faculty and staff dress down on Fridays. When a worthy cause is brought to our attention, we will send a donation.
During the Holiday Season, several donations where made to local families. Families from each school received gift certificates to Walmart and Shaws. We also had 100 gallons of oil delivered to a family in need. Additionally, one student was provided with clothing.
If anyone has a suggestion, please notify us at 624-8494, extention 202.
