NEW!
PHN
monthly planning meetings
for the 2007-2008 school year are as follows:
January 17th- B period
Tiverton High School’s Peer Helping Network (PHN) has been in existence
since the spring of 1999 and is considered to be a model program in the
state of Rhode Island (i.e. it has received commendations from the
Healthy Schools! Healthy Kids! initiative, the Rhode Island
Character Education Partnership, and the New England Association of
Schools & Colleges). Students throughout grades 9-12 are nominated by
their peers and are identified as good problem solvers and good
listeners. One of the main functions of the PHN is to organize and run
events that will bring students together. Students discuss
important, emerging school issues and apply solutions through
different projects. They also promote an atmosphere to improve student
relations. All of this is in a concerted effort to make the school
a more comfortable, safe, and accepting environment.
Parent's Evening/8th Grade Orientation:
incoming freshmen acquire “tips” on how to transition smoothly to a
different school environment as well as learn how to acclimate
successfully both academically (i.e. how not to “slack off” as freshmen)
and socially (through participation in extracurricular activities).
Freshman Orientation:
PHN students provide assistance to students as they adjust to their new
schedules. They are assigned to home rooms to help with opening day
orientation activities. Additionally, specially selected PHN students
act as mentors to those students in need of additional support.
Common Ground Café:
in collaboration with RI Hope (a community service organization), PHN
students have organized this student-driven evening of entertainment,
occurring several times during the year.
Mentoring New Students:
When new students transition to THS, they are assigned a peer helper to
help become acclimated to the school.
Pocasset Mentoring Project:
Under the auspices of the PHN, selected students are screened and
trained as mentors. They are then matched with selected elementary
school students.
***NEW! We will be screening
earlier this year for prospective students for the THS/Pocasset
