Mock Trial News
(from Principal's Newsletter)

A civil case was the focus this year for Mock Trial.  It revolved around a soccer injury.  Although no one on the THS Mock Trial Team has knowledge of soccer or its rules, the team did extraordinarily well.  Usually the team competes in three trials, however, due to the increase in participating schools, THS participated in four trials.  With an overall score of 627.5 (only 10 points behind the number one ranked school), THS ranked third in the state and first in public schools.  THS made it to the semi-finals with a tough loss to LaSalle.  Team members are: Dyaln Beattie, Noah Bourlett, Patrick Bourlett, Ali deMedeiros, Hallie Dowling-Huppert,Kelsey Edwards, Kelsey Gabriel, Josh Gabriel, Lexy Halpen, C. J. Lewis, Alicia McGovern, and Clarice Sousa.

Great Job, Team!

Mock Trial
By: Kelsey Edwards

The Tiverton contract issues have affected everyone at THS, including the award winning Mock Trial team. The team began their year without coaches and without advisers. "It was kind of a disaster," says one anonymous member of the team. Donna and Jay Edwards and Gale Gabriel soon signed on as advisers, as they are parents of the team’s "Kelsey Squared", members Kelsey Ed-wards and Kelsey Gabriel. The search for coaches then began. After a couple of weeks of corresponding via email, Roger Williams University law students Lisa Nelson and Jason Goddard signed on as the team coaches. The case this year is a civil one involving a soccer injury. Though many members regard the case as "boring" and no one on the team has knowledge of soccer or its rules, the THS mock trial team has done ex-tra ordinarily well. Trials have been held at the Newport Naval base and the Garrahy court-house and the Supreme Court in Providence. Typically, a team goes through three trials, however the Tiverton team was asked to do a fourth due to an uneven amount of teams in the state. With little difficulty and a lot of practice, the Tiverton team came out on top, with wins over Chariho, North Kingstown, Shea, and Rocky Hill School. With an overall score of 627.5 (only 10 points behind the school ranked first in the state) Tiverton High School ranked third in the state, and first in public schools. On March 3, the team went to trial in the Supreme Court in Providence against the Providence Country Day 1 team. Tiverton played defense, with lawyers Alison deMedeiros, Kelsey Edwards, and Kelsey Gabriel and witnesses Hallie Dowling-Huppert, Josh Gabriel, and Pat (Continued from page 2) Bourlett. After a nerve-wracking trial, Tiverton pre-vailed. The team then moved on to the semi-final level against LaSalle. On March 6, the plaintiff presented their case with lawyers Clarice Sousa, Lexy Halpen, and Alicia McGovern. Witness roles were played by CJ Lewis, Noah Bourlett, and Dylan Beedy. Unfortunately, despite a tough case put up by the Tiverton team, LaSalle won after a close and intense trial. "We've had a good year," said coach Jason Goddard. It is doubtful that there isn't a member of the team who wouldn't agree.
