The Tiverton Schools
Community Service Learning Program is designed to help students see the
relationships between academic subjects and the real world by joining
theory with experience which will better prepare them for careers or
continuing education. Students will have to take greater responsibility
for their learning as well as learn skills they may not learn in the
classroom such as teamwork, time management, work ethics and civic
responsibility. Students also have many cross-cultural experiences that
give them a greater understanding and respect for people of diverse
backgrounds.
Community service
hours performed outside of the program will be credited to the student
if it meets the criteria of service within the program and is approved
prior to performing the service. Service must be performed for
non-profit, governmental, community-based or health organizations and
should improve the quality of life for community residents or benefit
the community.
Students are also
offered the opportunity to receive service credit in school through
curriculum-related projects in selected courses and placements with
various departments during study/activity periods. The program plans to
expand it's classroom opportunities for students in the next year by
providing teachers with professional development, community resources
and other support for service project.
