The Tiverton School Department is committed to Service-Learning. Community service is more than a graduation requirement at Tiverton High School. The school culture is infused with Service-Learning. Service–learning strategies enrich the lives of all students by providing meaningful opportunities that promote personal, social, and intellectual growth, as well as civic responsibility and career exploration.
Service Learning is not just Volunteer Service! The goal of this program is for students to move from the idea of a mandatory number of hours and move toward a desire to contribute to their community in significant ways. As a part of the educational experience at Tiverton High School students are encouraged to have experiences in the “real world”. The Community Service-Learning Program seeks to motivate students to try out activities and opportunities that are different from those to which they are normally exposed. Students are expected to strive beyond the past experiences they have had and head on toward new encounters with different groups, individuals, and situations.
Community Service is not punishments. Unfortunately because we often hear of community service being mandated by the justice system/courts we have begun to equate community service with punishment. The Tiverton School Department Service Learning Program views community service as an essential part of living and learning. Students are encouraged to find service activities that are enjoyable and rewarding, not punitive.
