Department Philosophy
The Social Studies Department of Tiverton High School seeks to meet the needs of this community by being comprehensive in score. Aware of the diversity of our students with regard to career and educational orientation, the department provides a variety of courses designed to afford opportunities for participation in the affairs of society to all students.

Among the ideals promoted by the social studies cirrocumuli are respect for human dignity; equality of opportunity for all persons irrespective of race, creed, sex or ethnic identity; allegiance to our democratic heritage, and understanding of the foundation of our political, economic and social systems. Respect for the contributions of the past cultures to our present institutions is actively encouraged. This department seeks to maintain standards of excellence in each curriculum offering and in each level of an offering.

Through an emphasis on the importance of an individual’s contributions to his society, the deliberative nature of the American political system, the implication of international relations, the responsibilities of local, state national and global citizenship, the value of reasoned action, appreciation of the time factors involved in peaceful social change, and the significance of rule by law, the department seeks to equip students with a rationale for service to society.

Through a utilization of fundamental research and communication skills the department seeks to provide students with both the knowledge and the practical ability to participate fully in our social, economic and political systems at whatever levels they choose.
