Re:        Senior Project Schedule

Due to the lack of capacity and availability of staff to coordinate, organize, and facilitate a senior project release day, I am recommending that the oral presentation component of the project be given in the senior English class during the month of May.  We have typically utilized the senior project grades throughout the year in English and counted it as the course assessment final exam grade.  This assessment component would continue. The following major components of the project have been completed throughout the year and will be submitted in the next month(s).

·        Research paper

·        Mentoring documentation of fifteen hours

·        Portfolio (includes research paper, mentor letters, and reflective essays)

In February 2007, the school committee approved our Performance Based Graduation Requirement system and it has been accepted by the state.  I have attached the paragraph explaining the senior project process.  All components are on schedule for completion through the support of English classes and our senior project tutorials.  The final component is referenced as “a final oral presentation.”  I feel a final classroom presentation utilizing the same rubric will satisfy this requirement.  I do not find it necessary to request Wednesday, May 28th as an early release day for senior presentations this year.

I plan to meet with all senior English classes and their teachers next week to reinforce this format and the necessity to complete this prior to June 13th graduation.  This is a graduation proficiency requirement for the class of 2008,  and a summer school course will not substitute for this proficiency.  We anticipate all work and presentations to be completed by Friday, May 30th.  Make-up submissions and presentations will be offered during June 2nd and June 6th.  Students who do not complete this proficiency requirement will not be eligible for a diploma, and must complete the submission and presentation process during summer dates to be scheduled.  I will send a letter outlining this information to parents and guardians following the school committee meeting.
