GIRL’S
SOCCER 2005
Head Coach: Chris Messenger
Assistant Coach: Kristy Messenger
Our record league season was 13-2-1
Our final season record was 15-3-1
The coaches of the girls soccer team Kristy, Nicole and I would like the opportunity to say Thank you to our whole soccer team. We carried 31 Varsity and JV players this season. Each and every one of them put in a very competitive season. With seasoned seniors, very spunky juniors, creative sophomores and talented freshman we had all avenues covered. Our road to success was not an easy one. We worked hard and came to each game ready to play. We started with Narragansett who played us very well…our only tie of the season. Our second game was Prout. I think we played one of the best games we have every played. Came up with a loss allowing one goal off a very difficult strike. I was a little disappointed that we lost but not in how they played. We had some tough games and some very weak competition. We took every game as it came. The only loss we had was to Prout this season. They were very talented and we could not contain them. We came in 2nd place in our Division and played Lincoln in the quarter finals to a 5 to 2 Win at home. We had a lot of support at our games. A special “thank you” to all our parents and friends. We went to No. Providence to play our Semi-Final game. Our opponent was Middletown. We lost to Middletown last year by a 1-0 score, so it was sweet revenge when we beat them 2 to 1. It was a very exciting game. They came to play but we came to win. Teams that win their Semi-final games are invited to the MetLife Awards Breakfast held for Seniors and Captains of the Finalists. It was a rewarding time as they have all worked so hard to achieve such success. Unfortunately Prout was relentless; they were not going to let down this year. Losing 4 to 0 was not what I would have liked but we did not give up. This was a great group of seniors. Making playoffs all four years, and finals for their last two has a lot to do with determination, talent and having a great work and team ethic. They work hard, play hard and achieved so many goals. I will miss this group very much.
I have enjoyed my time with them…challenging at times, frustrating at times, exciting at times, heartbreaking at times but never would they let me take them for granted.
SENIOR PROFILES
Alysia Medeiros - Senior Captain; 4 Year Varsity Starter; Has Been My Sweeper for 4 Years
Alysia has had an incredible impact on this team. Her abilities are many. This team depended on her talent, speed and the knowledge that she was an outstanding Sweeper. She was confident in her ability and was always positive on the field. The ability she possessed in her roll as a defender gave her team the strength to help them get to the playoffs year after year. Over the last 4 years, Alysia played with heart; injuries that might have side lined some but not Alysia. A special athlete, I know you will do well going forward into your College adventures. Best of luck at Johnson and Wales, and in all your adventures.

Amy Szelag - Senior Captain; 4 Year Varsity Starter
A player you will always notice on the field. She is the player challenging, stealing the ball creating havoc for the opponents on the field. Amy has had many rolls on this team. Due to the fact she can play in all positions made her a valuable commodity. A striker who had a lot of success over her 4 years. A respected player on the field. When I needed strength on the field I would put Amy in the Midfield. Playing the position of midfield she could handle wing or center mid, what ever was needed of her. Amy led her teammates by example, worked hard at practice and held the most minutes on the field time this year. Strong willed and very skilled gave her the ability of never giving up on the task at hand. I have enjoyed the opportunity to coach Amy, watching her athletic ability mature as well as developing into a great leader and a great person. Best of Luck in all your dreams. Coach

Rebecca Poirier -2 Year Captain; 4 Year Varsity Starter
Becca has been the heart and sole of our Midfield for passed four years. A freshman started as my center midfield. Strong, composed, confident, not afraid of the tasks that were asked of her in this controlling position. Becca plays with determination and a high quality of play. Always gave 150% on the field. She was awarded Captain in her Junior year for her leadership and work ethic.
Came into her Senior year as talking Captain. Even with her injuries this season she still is one of the most talented players I have ever had and pleasure to coach. I will miss her understanding of the game and her ability to turn games around with her determination and never giving up attitude. Thank you Becca, I know you will be successful in all that you.

Kerri Thornsbury - Senior Captain; 4 Year Varsity Starter
Strong will, very talented and had a mind of her own. She had the talent and played with such determination. Kerri was one the reasons we went to Playoffs in her Junior year. She scored the 1st goal against Prout in our Semi final game. She played defense, stopper most of the game but would switch with another player. It worked and she had an opportunity and took advantage of the opportunity and scored for her team. I have watched players mature over the years but I would have to say that Kerri became one the players I will always remember. She became a natural leader, matured into a player that any coach would be proud of. We were saddened when she received an injury on September 30th and took her from the game. She worked hard to get back into shape to play near playoffs but when she was able to start the first practice a basic move took her out for good. Her heart inspired the team and they will always remember how hard she worked to achieve her goal. She supported the team at all our games and practices, a leader that is an inspiration to us all. I know Kerri you will always succeed. Thank you for being you. Best of luck in all that you do.

Brittaney Potter - 3 Year Varsity Starter
An outstanding goal keeper. Britt has a way of taking care of the game. She came to our team in her Sophomore year. Had a lot of energy and shared the Goalie position with another keeper. Junior year she was our only keeper and had a great presents on the field. Respected by her teammates for her ability to be successful in her net. Britt took her job very seriously. A team player, organizing team parties to get everyone on the same page, working as a team. In her Junior year, she was one of reasons we stayed in the Semi final game with her saves including a penalty kick before we went into overtime and the shoot-out. I have always stated that it was a whole team effort to get to the finals but a special effort of our keeper who had an incredible game kept us on top. A talented athlete, confident in her abilities will take her a long way in this world. Best of luck Britt in all your endeavors.

Alyssa Janick - 4 Year Player
Quiet, talented and very good soccer player. Alyssa didn’t want to be noticed. A huge part of our team. A team player who worked hard, she knew she could do a lot more than she was being asked to do on the field. Didn’t always get the time she wanted, until she made coach realize she was the player to fill that midfield position or striker position. An athlete who knew she had a lot of confidence in herself. Example: Playoff situation I need a player to take the penalty kick. We had been thru our first round of 5 players. We were tied. We are now in sudden death player strike a goal or go home. At this point I asked for someone who thought they could take a shot for the team, Alyssa stepped up and when asked are you sure “Yes Coach, I know I can do it. “ And she went to the penalty line and put the ball past the keeper which was the winning goal and sent us to finals. That was when you know you have a confident player, even if she had missed the goal she had matured into a player you wanted on your field. Alyssa was a big factor in the team making playoffs and getting to finals again this year. Alyssa I am proud of the player you have become. Best of luck in your future challenges and always have the confidence you displayed on our soccer field. Coach
Amanda Marks - 4 Year Varsity Player
Amanda had a great presence on the soccer field. Amanda was the player I would go to off the bench in her first two years. Worked hard in practice and in every game she played. Worked very hard in the mid field for us this year, keeping our mid field strong on the right side. Scored goals and took chances that I think even surprised her. Voted the most improved player in 4 years. Being noticed for her ability on the soccer field Amanda always came to every game in style. Her cleats were very bright and stylish. If you saw our games you would know what Amanda’s favorite color was. Amanda you had a great work ethic, a lot of heart and I appreciate your effort these last 4 years. Best of luck, I know you will have a lot of success. Coach
