Tiverton Tigers Girls Basketball
By: Liz DeMello
From January 2008 Tiger Tribune

The Girls’ basketball team here at THS is a rejuvenated team this year, due mainly to the motivation and support of their new coach, Bubba Ponte. He has always wanted a coaching job at the high school level, and after eighteen years, he got the chance he has been hoping for.
For his first year as the girls’ basketball coach at THS, he and his players are working hard to become a better, faster, and stronger team, one that will produce many victories this season. Senior captain Rachel Motta speaks highly of their new coach, saying “he’s an amazing coach and knows how to push the players, making them become better and smarter players.” The girls have already had eight games so far this season, with their league record currently 5-1, putting them at first place in Division 2 East.
One of their more memorable games so far this season was the recent home game on January 9th between the Tigers and the Barrington Eagles. The game was close, with the teams tied going into the second half. The crowd then teemed with energy and enthusiasm, cheering their team on as they pushed hard and pulled ahead, beating the Eagles 43-34. The Tigers’ win that night was against a team who had not lost a league game in three years, also sending the Tigers to first place in Division 2 East.
