How can Tiverton Public Schools go from good to great?

·        Increase mathematics performance

·        Improve communications

·        Quality management - contract

·        Change excellence to include equity

·        Focus on early literacy

·        Connect with families before children enter school (i.e., create a reading system where children have to read 1000 books before they start kindergarten)

·        Increase funding from non-tax sources

·        Keep student achievement on the front burner

·        Expand world languages – start in elementary school

·        Improve public relations

·        Implement a merit pay system that better aligns compensation with performance

·        We need to change “Excellence in Education” to “An Equal Opportunity for an Excellent Education for each child”; Reach and Teach

·        Address areas of need to enhance test scores therefore enhancing the town awareness and general pride and willingness to invest to better the schools

How do we engage our community in improving our schools?

·        Develop community outreach program

·        Invite public into the schools to see kids present their successes via performances (i.e. music, computer, literacy, arts, etc.)

·        Recruit community volunteers (coaches, mentors, etc.); teachers don’t need to do it all

·        Community based integration by having programs open for townspeople to come into the schools

·        Increase opportunities for community groups to use/see school facilities

·        Mentoring – bring people of different occupations into the schools
